概要:
Insects can repair wounds and regenerate body parts in response to physical damage. Wound healing in butterfly pupal wing tissues is developmentally interesting because ectopic color patterns develop during healing, suggesting
…
that normal and damage-induced color patterns may use similar mechanisms. Here we physiologically investigated wound healing and ectopic color pattern formation in butterfly pupal wing tissues using the blue pansy butterfly Junonia orithya. In response to physical puncture damage, various ectopic color patterns are formed around the damage site. After the wounding operation, we observed hemocytes migrating over long distances along the wing veins (lacunae) toward the damage site, where hemocytes and epidermal cells formed cellular clusters. Calcium oscillations were observed in cells at and near the damage site. Calcium oscillations were transiently affected by ruthenium red, an inhibitor of calcium transporters and channels, and ruthenium red caused various abnormalities in the scales of adult wings. These results suggest that cell migration, cluster formation, and calcium oscillations play important roles in wound healing and scale development at and near the damage site. Ectopic color patterns may develop in response to local calcium oscillations as a consequence of the evolutionary co-option of the healing process for normal development.

概要:
This study aimed to determine the feasibility of vertical evacuation of patients with chronic respiratory disease living in a tsunami inundation area in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The participants included 34 patients with chronic

respiratory disease at Public Hospital A and Private Hospital B in Okinawa Prefecture until April 2023 and March 2024, respectively. The 6-min walk test and stair climbing test were measured to determine walking and stair ascending speeds. Walking speeds were used to determine horizontal evacuation time from home to the designated evacuation site for comparison with the estimated tsunami arrival time. The time required for vertical evacuation to suitable buildings was calculated using walking and stair ascending speeds. The mean grace time from the occurrence of the earthquake to the start of horizontal evacuation was significantly shorter than the grace time to the start of vertical evacuation time (p = 0.003). No significant difference was observed in the expected success rates when the evacuation was started immediately after the earthquake. However, when the evacuation was started later than 20 min after the earthquake, the expected success rates were significantly higher for vertical evacuation than for horizontal evacuation (20 min; p = 0.007, 25 min; p = 0.009, 30 min; p = 0.011). The results show that vertical evacuation is more effective for tsunami evacuation than horizontal evacuation and is feasible for patients with chronic respiratory disease. Thus, vertical evacuation should be included in individual evacuation plans for those who require support for tsunami evacuation.

概要:
Angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare, aggressive malignancy originating from vascular or lymphatic endothelial cells. Despite its
…
severity, little is known about its epidemiology, and no geographical regions have previously been identified as having an exceptionally high incidence. We retrospectively analyzed medical records spanning 37 years (1987–2023) in Okinawa, Japan, identifying 135 cases of AS that were used to calculate its incidence. This incidence was compared to global data to highlight significant regional differences. Factors related to patients' survival were also assessed. The age-adjusted incidence of AS of the scalp in Okinawa was 4.1 per million per year (mpy; 2015 Japanese model population) or 2.0 per mpy (2000 US standard population), significantly higher than the global data, including in the United States (about eightfold higher) and mainland Japan (about fourfold higher). The estimated five-year survival for patients with AS of the scalp in Okinawa was 9.2%. Multivariate analysis identified surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy as significant factors associated with patient survival. This study provides the first evidence of a significantly higher incidence rate of AS of the scalp in Okinawa. Given its rarity, further research is crucial to uncover the epidemiological, genetic, and environmental factors driving this cancer.

概要:
We discuss a degeneracy of n-dimensional hypergeometric integrals associated with certain hypersphere arrangement. We in
…
vestigate it in two ways when a certain generic condition for spherical arrangement breaks down. This situation is described using the terms of the Cayley–Menger determinants. One of the main results is the degeneracy of the nth twisted de Rham cohomology, which is expressed using the contiguity relation of the hypergeometric integral. Complementary to this, the other main result is the degeneracy of the nth twisted homology over the dual local system, which can be described using the asymptotic behavior of the hypergeometric integral.

概要:
A graph Γ is called an n-Cayley graph over a group G if there exists a semiregular subgroup of Aut(Γ) that is isomorphic

to G with n orbits (of equal size). This is one of the generalizations of Cayley graphs. In this paper, we show that a sequence of n-Cayley graphs over solvable groups cannot form an expander family. We also show that a connected graph being an n-Cayley graph over G is equivalent to being a Galois covering with Galois group G.
