2007年度～2009年度科学研究費補助金（若手研究(B)）研究成果報告書
研究概要(和文)：本研究では、明治維新直後に誕生した日本の新聞が、公開の言論による政治空間を形成した過程について、近隣諸国との関係・紛争をめぐる議論を中心に分析した。征韓論と民権論の結合に象徴されるように、言論の自由（政府批判を含む）の追求とナショナリズムとは親和的だったが、“国益のための避戦”論のよう … に議論には多様性があり、公に異論を戦わせること自体に重きが置かれていた。コミュニケーションの形態にも多様な模索があり、琉球併合問題をめぐっては中国の新聞との相互参照もみられた。
研究概要(英文)：This research analyzes the process of forming public sphere by the early Japanese newspapers just after the Meiji Revolution and focuses on their debates on the relations and conflicts between Japan and the East Asian neighboring countries. Despite the strong tie between public opinion and nationalism, the opinions were various including pro-war and anti-war. This shows that the journalism gave weight to open discussions among the different opinions. They also tried the various ways of communication, and there was even the mutual references between the Japanese and the Chinese newspapers at the time of Japan’s annexation of Ryukyu.
