honetic value or to /b/ and, on the other hand, it is preserved in parts of some words, especially, when conditioned by semi-consonants /j, w/ and liquids /l, r/. This article deals with the persistence of /f/ in Spanish with special attention to the consonant clusters of /fj, fw/ and /fl, fr/ from the perspective of Romance linguistics. First, we investigate the state of the F in Spanish and the explanations given about the maintenance of /f/. Secondly, we analyze the conservation of /f/ in all the Romance dialects that present /h/ (or /ø/), derived from /f/, outside the Iberian Peninsula: Gascon, the Nuorese dialect of Sardinian and some dialects of Italian and Romanian. Finally, with all the observations, we identify the phonological conditions that tend to preserve /f/ in the Romance dialects in which /f/ > /h/ (o /ø/) occurs. Furthermore, we estimate that the phonological distribution of /f/ that current Spanish has in comparison with other Romance dialects mentioned is not peculiar and we argue that the basis of the phonological distribution of /f/ in current Spanish would already existed in primitive Castilian Romance.
