Based on the artist’s Mura (2001) photographic work that documented the natural cycle of the village’s rice cultivation and the harvest festivals associated with it, we aim to explore the concept of the island’s ecocultural identity as it manifests through the artist’s and the community’s unique connection with the island nature and culture. As Akina is the last remaining village on the island where rice cultivation is still taking place, and linked to the harvest festivals, the visual documentation of these practices provides us a rare glimpse into what was once an integral part of Amami’s natural, socio-cultural, and spiritual/animistic islandscape before sugarcane was imposed on the islanders by mainland Japanese agricultural interventions and impositions.

To get such a textile concession agreement from the Japanese, US offi cials had considered refusing to sign the Okinawa Reversion Treaty or to return the Senkaku Islands. However, Nixon and his advisors opposed those options since they were afraid that a confrontation over trade would spill over into defense and other security issues. Linkages among different issue areas, such as trade and security, tend to be precarious since the leverage obtained could be unclear, and various repercussions might be diffi cult to measure. When one country attempts to solve its domestic issues by linking them to other sensitive topics, domestic opposition might disrupt negotiation of the agreement or cause it to be rescinded.

the land rent-structure that emerged out of the militarized colonial settlement of the postwar decade and the uprisings it inspired. In this article, I ask how colonial dispossession in militarized contexts shapes urban planning processes and outcomes for closed military sites. Using qualitative research in Central Okinawa, I argue that planning goals seeking to restore public access to demilitarized sites are hindered where there is a predominance of private property claims to base land. This work contributes to an understanding of planning’s colonial formations, especially as they operate through militarism, and deepens our understanding of the range of considerations that planners must make when approaching the redevelopment of militarized land in indigenous places.

scales of coastal marine fishes in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. We here report its host range, focusing on commercial fishes landed at the Yaeyama Fisheries Cooperative of Ishigaki Island. During the study period from February 2017 to May 2018, metacercariae were recovered from four species of goatfishes (Mullidae spp.) and 14 species of parrotfishes (Scaridae spp.), with new host records for four species. Since metacercaria infection decreases the rating of fish prices in local fishery cooperatives due to their poor appearance, the occurrence conditions in newly recognized hosts should be evaluated to help protect commercial values.<br />吸虫の一種Scaphanocephalus adamsiは, フィリピン周辺および琉球列島沿岸に生息する海産魚類のヒレや鱗下に被嚢幼虫(メタセルカリア)として寄生する. 市場に並ぶ水産魚種への寄生も日常的に確認されるため，宿主範囲を含めた情報の蓄積が求められる. そこで本稿では, 八重山漁協において被嚢幼虫が認められたヒメジ類およびブダイ類を報告する. 2017年2月から2018年5月までの間に, ４種のヒメジ科魚類および14種のブダイ科魚類から本種幼虫が得られ, 4種が新宿主記録に該当することが明らかとなった. 被嚢幼虫の存在は魚価低下の一要因であるため, 各宿主魚類における寄生条件を明らかにし, 価格安定へ向けた取り組みがなされる必要がある.

No record of this species is known other than the original description, which was based only on the holotype and underwater photographs from Indonesia. This is the second record of the species, which provides additional information regarding the morphology, distribution, and ecology of this species.<br />沖縄県安田沖よりフサカサゴ科のMinous groeneveldi Matsunuma & Motomura, 2018が1個体採集され, 2021年3月10日現在, 沖縄美ら海水族館で飼育されている. 本種はインドネシア産の1標本に基づき記載されたが，それ以降報告のない稀種である. ここでは飼育個体の詳細な観察に基づき, その形態および飼育下で観察された生態を記載する. これは本種の2番目の記録であると同時に日本海域からの初記録であるため, 新標準和名“アダヒメオコゼ”を提唱する.

in socioeconomic inequalities in smoking among Japanese adolescents between 2008 and 2016. Methods:We conducted a repeated cross-sectional study using data from three surveys of high school students in Okinawa, Japan, in 2008, 2012, and 2016. The study participants consisted of 7902 students in grades 10 through 12 (15–18 years). Smoking was assessed as current cigarette use. SES indicators included familial SES (parental education and family structure) and student’s own SES (school type). To evaluate absolute and relative inequalities, prevalence differences (PDs) and ratios (PRs) between low and high SES groups were estimated. The slope index of inequality (SII) and relative index of inequality (RII) were also calculated. Results:Smoking prevalence among boys and girls significantly declined from 11.5% and 6.2% in 2008 to 4.7% and 1.9% in 2016, respectively. Similar decreasing trends in smoking were found among most of the SES groups. The PDs and SII for parental education in boys and family structure in girls decreased over time while those for school type persisted among boys and girls. The PRs and RII for school type in boys increased while those for other SES indicators among both sexes remained stable over time. Conclusions:Smoking among Japanese adolescents has been declining and time trends of socioeconomic inequalities in smoking varied by absolute and relative measures. Further policies and/or interventions to reduce smoking inequalities should focus on the context of schools, especially in vocational high schools.

under zero gravity. We consider a half-zone model of a liquid bridge between a cold (top plane) and a hot (bottom plane) disks. The highest Si concentration is on the top of the liquid bridge. The aspect ratio (A_s) drastically affects the critical Marangoni numbers: the critical solutal Marangoni number (under small thermal Marangoni numbers (Ma_TA_s<_~1800)) has the same dependence on As as the critical thermal Marangoni number (under small solutal Marangoni numbers (400<_~Ma_CA_s<_~800)), i.e., it decreases with increasing A_s. The azimuthal wavenumber of the traveling wave mode increases as decreasing A_s, i.e., larger azimuthal wavenumbers (m=6,7,11,12, and 13) appear for A_s=0.25, and only m=2 appears when A_s is one and larger. The oscillatory modes of the hydro waves have been extracted as the spatiotemporal structures by using dynamic mode decomposition (DMD). The present study suggests a proper parameter region of quiescent steady flow suitable for crystal growth for smaller aspect ratios of the liquid bridge.

information on living a healthy life in Japan. A previous content analysis study did not include a comprehensive analysis of health-related information of the international student guidebooks in Japan. The purpose of this content analysis was to analyze health-related information in the guidebooks provided to international students by national universities in Japan. Methods: In April 2020, a review of the national universities in Japan’s 46 prefecture and the university guidebooks, which can be downloaded from the university official websites and Google page versions in English, was performed. After the selection process, health-related information in the guidebooks for international students from 35 universities were analyzed. The "Health Management on Campus" document issued by the Japanese Association of University Health Organization was used as the reference to create categories of this research. The data were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis methodology proposed by Bowers (1970).1 Results: An analysis of health-related content from 35 international student guidebooks yielded 871 initial codes, including 41 categories. Categories and sub categories created from codes that were shown in less than 5 schools guide book were a total of 153 categories, including 680 codes. After the re-classification, 27 categories and 91 sub categories were gathered. Of the 27 categories, 17 categories were related to on-campus services, 14 categories of off-campus services. And four categories in and out-school. In 14 categories from 5 or more universities, which had 191 codes. After the re-classification, of the 14 categories, six categories were related to on-campus services, 11 categories of off-campus services. And three categories in and out-school. The information in the guidebooks was unclear in terms of mental illness, lifestyle disorders, and women's health, including pregnancy notification procedures and abortion-related information. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the least mentioned content is related to catering services, mental health support services, exercise and health, and women’s health. Therefore, the results of this study showed the importance of understanding the risk factors and self-control approaches for mental illness and lifestyle diseases. For promoting health well-being and self-care awareness among overseas students, the registration system and public care for pregnant and the cultural context of the abortion-related matters in Japan should be filled in the guidebook for international students.

The effects of this plant extract on crops and soil microorganisms have been studied, but the effects on microorganisms of pine needles have not been investigated. Therefore, we surveyed the influence of the plant extract on pine seedling (Pinus luchuensis Mayr) and its phyllosphere microbes of pine needle. It became clear that the harmful effect on the pine seedling and phyllosphere microbial flora were not observed. Thus, B. pilosa var. radiata extract is judged to be an environmentally friendly control material from the viewpoint of environmental assessment.<br />沖縄に分布するアワユキセンダングサの抽出液は，植物寄生性線虫，一般農業害虫およびマツ材線虫病関連生物に対して高い殺虫・忌避活性を有することが知られている．農作物や土壌微生物に対する本植物抽出液の影響は調査されているが，マツやマツ葉微生物に対する影響は調査されていない．そこで，リュウキュウマツとマツ葉針微生物に及ぼす影響を調べた結果，悪影響は認められないことが明らかになった．従って，アワユキセンダングサ抽出液は環境評価の観点から，環境に優しい防除資材であると判断された．

We aimed to determine the effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) dapagliflozin monotherapy on glucose metabolism in a mouse model of NASH/T2D, with a focus on its diuretic effects. To imitate ascites and to determine its severity by imaging, meglumine sodium amidotrizoate (MSA) was infused into the abdominal cavities of mice. The reduction in ascites induced by dapagliflozin was compared with that induced by furosemide using microcomputed tomography. The effects of each drug on hemodynamics were also compared. A dapagliflozin-related improvement in glucose tolerance was achieved in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) or an HFD + methionine-and-choline-deficient diet (MCDD). In dapagliflozin-treated NASH mice, hypoglycemia was not identified during 24-hour casual blood glucose monitoring. In the dapagliflozin and furosemide-treated groups, the time taken for the resolution of artificial ascites was significantly shorter than in the untreated group, and there were no significant differences between these groups. Furosemide significantly reduced the blood pressure and significantly increased the heart rate of the mice. Dapagliflozin caused a mild decrease in systolic, but not diastolic blood pressure, and the heart rate and circulating catecholamine and renin-aldosterone concentrations were unaffected. Dapagliflozin treatment improved glycemic control in the NASH mice versus untreated mice. Thus, dapagliflozin had a prompt diuretic effect but did not adversely affect the hemodynamics of mice with NASH and T2D. Therefore, it may be useful for the treatment of patients with both T2D and liver cirrhosis.

In some species exhibiting Batesian mimicry, nonmimetic individuals coexist as polymorphism in the same population despite the benefits of mimicry. In a previous study, we proposed that the abundance of mimics is limited by that of the models, leading to polymorphic Batesian mimicry in the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio polytes, on the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. We found that their mimic ratios (MRs), which varied among the Islands, were explained by the model abundance of each habitat, rather than isolation by distance or phylogenetic constraint based on the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. In the present study, this possibility was reexamined based on hundreds of nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 93 P. polytes individuals from five Islands of the Ryukyus. We found that the population genetic and phylogenetic structures of P. polytes largely corresponded to the geographic arrangement of the habitat Islands, and the genetic distances among island populations show significant correlation with the geographic distances, which was not evident by the mtDNA‐based analysis. A partial Mantel test controlling for the present SNP‐based genetic distances revealed that the MRs of P. polytes were strongly correlated with the model abundance of each island, implying that negative frequency‐dependent selection interacting with model species shaped and maintained the mimetic polymorphism. Taken together, our results support the possibility that predation pressure, not isolation by distance or other neutral factors, is a major driving force of evolution of the Batesian mimicry in P. polytes from the Ryukyus.

Analysis of Planet Dove and Sentinel-2B imagery allowed successful detection of coral-spawn slicks at Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan (24°31′40″N, 124°17′31″E), by using reflectance values in the green and red wavelength regions. This detection was attributable to both their high spatial resolution (3.7 m and 10 m, respectively) and high temporal resolution (1 day and 5 days, respectively), given that coral spawning occurs within a short period (up to several days), typically once a year, and that the coral-spawn slicks have narrow widths of ~10 m. The number of the detected coral-spawn slicks was small, possibly because of coral decline around Ishigaki Island caused by the 2016 worldwide mass coral bleaching event. High-frequency satellite observations, including those from satellite constellations, should provide a powerful tool for understanding coral-reef processes and features whose detection requires high spatial and temporal resolution.

Fengshui belief, clan system, village rules and regulations, fengshui worship tradition, and customs have all played important roles in villagers’ planting and conservation of fengshui forests. It is suggested that the government should recognize the cultural and ecological value of fengshui forests and integrate the local rules and village regulations into the current policy frameworks to improve fengshui (culturally preserved) forests management with favourable polices such as subsidies and conservation strategy. China’s fengshui forests suggest the cultural importance of ecosystem services from forests, and the role of culture in forest conservation.

COVID-19 remain unclear. We herein report a patient with COVID-19 treated with TCZ who developed acute hypertriglyceridaemia. Despite favipiravir treatment, acute respiratory distress syndrome developed in a 45-year-old patient with COVID-19; thus, TCZ was initiated. The triglyceride levels greatly increased after TCZ administration. Physicians should consider the negative impact of TCZ on the lipid profile in patients with COVID-19, although COVID-19-induced CRS itself may be an aggravating factor.

^<11>B-NMR revealed the presence of AB after NH_3/N_2H_4 treatment of milled h-BN (BNH_x) although the yield of AB was less than 5%. The conversion mechanism was clarified as B-H bonds on the h-BN surface created by ball-milling under hydrogen pressure have an ability to form AB, which was confirmed by Thermogravimetry-Residual Gas Analysis (TG-RGA) and Infrared (IR) analysis. The reaction routes are also the same as regeneration route of polyborazylene because intermediates of AB such as (B(NH_2)_3 and hydrazine borane were found by solution ^<11>B-NMR after soaking BNH_x in liquid NH_3 and hydrazine, respectively. Because of the fact that all reactions proceed on the h-BN surface and no reaction proceeds when neat h-BN is treated, breaking of B_3N_3 ring structure and then creation of B-H bond is the key issue to increase conversion yield of AB.

Our material from the Ryukyus enable us to describe the morphology of taxonomically important male characters (abdomen, telson, and gonopods) of this poorly known species for the first time. The assignment of the species to Oreotlos is fully confirmed.<br />久米島および宮古群島の伊良部島より採集された4個体の標本に基づき,コブシガニ科ツノカルイシコブシ属Oreotlos Ihle, 1918 のOreotlos pala Tan & Ng, 1996を再記載した.本種は,マリアナ諸島グアム島で採集された雌1個体に基づいて記載され,その後,川本・奥野(2003)による一般向けのガイドブックに久米島で撮影された個体の水中写真が掲載されているにすぎない稀種であった.本種の雄の形態はこれまで知られておらず,またホロタイプは鉗脚と歩脚を欠いているが,本研究の検討標本は原記載にも示されている頭胸甲背面の肝域後方,側方突出部,鰓域後方にそれぞれ1個大きく深いくぼみを有することにより,同種であると判断した.本種には標準和名が与えられていなかったため,頭胸甲背面に月面のクレーターを彷佛させる顕著なくぼみを有することから,ゲツメンカルイシコブシの新称を提唱する.

with major depressive episode (MDE) who visited our clinic. Associations between symptomatological combinations of the DMX-12 and MF or MD were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC). The rate of MF was 4.2% while that of MD was 22.6%. Eight symptoms (overreactivity, inner tension, racing/crowded thought, impulsivity, irritability, aggression, risk-taking behavior, and dysphoria) with their AUC > 0.6 for ROC curves were specially focused on distinguishing patients with MF or MD from non-mixed patients. By using these 8 symptoms, 40.5% of the overall patients were screened as positive at the same cut-off value (≥13) for both MD and MF. The AUC of ROC curve and sensitivity/specificity were well balanced together with sufficient negative predictive values. The abovementioned 8 symptoms seem to be helpful for primary screening and negative check of DMX with considerable severity during MDE.

siganid fish with a broad dispersal strategy, which may also exploit its great mobility to enhance self-recruitment. Variations in mitochondrial DNA sequences were analysed to estimate the genetic structure and demographic history of Siganus spinus in the West Pacific. In total, 446 nucleotide sequences, including the tRNAThr gene, the tRNAPro gene, and the first half of the control region, were analysed from 240 individuals sampled at five sites spanning the West Pacific Ocean; 37 haplotypes were identified. Our results showed significant geographic genetic structure as well as isolation by distance. Both neutrality tests and mismatch distribution indicated that the population expansion of S. spinus through the study area may have occurred in the late Quaternary. A dispersal strategy characterised by large juveniles and open-sea distribution may have contributed to a sudden population expansion after the last glacial period, along with an expansion of distribution.
