概要: 筆者は平成27 年度から平成29 年度まで,異分野融合型の研究として,沖縄感染症研究拠点形成促進事業「動物媒介性感染症対策の沖縄での施策提言とネットワーク形成に関する研究」に共同研究者として参画した。感染症対策における技術イノベーションと政 策・施策提言をテーマに取り組み,その成果とネットワークを活用した,新たな研究の展開を模索してきたものの,長らく方向性が定まらなかったが,今回のコロナ禍を受けて,これまでに考えてきた研究課題を再整理することにより,実践的な提言につながる研究を探求していきたい。 続きを見る

概要: Many blood glucose-lowering drugs cannot be used once patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease develop nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Therefore, such patients often require insulin treatment. We aimed to determine the effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) dapagliflozin monotherapy on glucose metabolism in a mouse model of NASH/T2D, with a focus on its diuretic effects. To imitate ascites and to determine its severity by imaging, meglumine sodium amidotrizoate (MSA) was infused into the abdominal cavities of mice. The reduction in ascites induced by dapagliflozin was compared with that induced by furosemide using microcomputed tomography. The effects of each drug on hemodynamics were also compared. A dapagliflozin-related improvement in glucose tolerance was achieved in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) or an HFD + methionine-and-choline-deficient diet (MCDD). In dapagliflozin-treated NASH mice, hypoglycemia was not identified during 24-hour casual blood glucose monitoring. In the dapagliflozin and furosemide-treated groups, the time taken for the resolution of artificial ascites was significantly shorter than in the untreated group, and there were no significant differences between these groups. Furosemide significantly reduced the blood pressure and significantly increased the heart rate of the mice. Dapagliflozin caused a mild decrease in systolic, but not diastolic blood pressure, and the heart rate and circulating catecholamine and renin-aldosterone concentrations were unaffected. Dapagliflozin treatment improved glycemic control in the NASH mice versus untreated mice. Thus, dapagliflozin had a prompt diuretic effect but did not adversely affect the hemodynamics of mice with NASH and T2D. Therefore, it may be useful for the treatment of patients with both T2D and liver cirrhosis. 続きを見る

概要: We provide a simpler proof for an infinite product expression of Gustafson’s q-beta integral of type G_2 with 4 parameters. We extend Gustafson’s q-integral to a q-hypergeometric integral of type G_2 with 6 parameters. Under a constraint of the parameters called the balancing condition, we obtain two explicit forms of q-difference equations satisfied by the q-hypergeometric integral of type G_2. Taking limit for a parameter, the q-hypergeometric integral of type G_2 degenerates to Gustafson’s q-integral, and one of two q-difference equations becomes that satisfied by Gustafson’s q-integral. Using this we consequently have an alternative proof for the infinite product of Gustafson’s q-beta integral again. 続きを見る

概要: Batesian mimicry is a striking example of Darwinian evolution, in which a mimetic species resembles toxic or unpalatable model species, thereby receiving protection from predators. In some species exhibiting Batesian mimicry, nonmimetic individuals coexist as polymorphism in the same population despite the benefits of mimicry. In a previous study, we proposed that the abundance of mimics is limited by that of the models, leading to polymorphic Batesian mimicry in the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio polytes, on the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. We found that their mimic ratios (MRs), which varied among the Islands, were explained by the model abundance of each habitat, rather than isolation by distance or phylogenetic constraint based on the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. In the present study, this possibility was reexamined based on hundreds of nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 93 P. polytes individuals from five Islands of the Ryukyus. We found that the population genetic and phylogenetic structures of P. polytes largely corresponded to the geographic arrangement of the habitat Islands, and the genetic distances among island populations show significant correlation with the geographic distances, which was not evident by the mtDNA‐based analysis. A partial Mantel test controlling for the present SNP‐based genetic distances revealed that the MRs of P. polytes were strongly correlated with the model abundance of each island, implying that negative frequency‐dependent selection interacting with model species shaped and maintained the mimetic polymorphism. Taken together, our results support the possibility that predation pressure, not isolation by distance or other neutral factors, is a major driving force of evolution of the Batesian mimicry in P. polytes from the Ryukyus. 続きを見る

概要: This study provides the first report of reflectance spectra of coral-spawn slicks and their detection using optical satellite data. The reflectance spectra show that coral-spawn slicks can be discriminated from other sea-surface features such as wave foam and floating Sargassum. Analysis of Planet Dove and Sentinel-2B imagery allowed successful detection of coral-spawn slicks at Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan (24°31′40″N, 124°17′31″E), by using reflectance values in the green and red wavelength regions. This detection was attributable to both their high spatial resolution (3.7 m and 10 m, respectively) and high temporal resolution (1 day and 5 days, respectively), given that coral spawning occurs within a short period (up to several days), typically once a year, and that the coral-spawn slicks have narrow widths of ~10 m. The number of the detected coral-spawn slicks was small, possibly because of coral decline around Ishigaki Island caused by the 2016 worldwide mass coral bleaching event. High-frequency satellite observations, including those from satellite constellations, should provide a powerful tool for understanding coral-reef processes and features whose detection requires high spatial and temporal resolution. 続きを見る
