L and TOEIC. However, the foregoing scores do not guaranteethat they develop one of the most important intercultural communication competences, i.e.,sense of humor. The paper proposes the first step of understanding English humor should be the examination of words in dictionaries, rather than contextualized humorous episodes, which might engender more difficulties of understanding. The secondary gift of “the first step” is that Japanese might discover extra humor which the native speakers might not notice.

的定義内で「お手本通り」の学びに陥ってしまっている。本稿では,『ロングマン英和辞典』をデータにして「ユーモラス」とラベル化された語に焦点を当てて，１）ことばの意味をアクティブに操作する一方法としてレトリック分析で考察した，２）「ユーモア」の理解と実践が「アメリカ文化理解」に繋がる可能性も説いた，３）ユーモラスな意味を充分に理解するためには，基礎的修辞法の操作と語がもたらすイメージに思いを馳せれば，さほど複雑ではないことも説明した。
